The adoption of energy efficiency measures is 50 per cent greater in non-metros than metros

Schneider Electric India, in partnership with AEEE, has announced the findings of a national study on the energy consumption profile of Indian businesses and drivers for clean energy investment. This survey was conducted in the month of September 2013, with 300 respondents across metro and Tier-II cities in India providing details on how they look at their energy consumption.

KEY FINDINGS:

93 per cent of the respon
dents would like to reduce their energy costs, but 55 per cent of them do not have either the goals or the know-how for reduction;

    About 40 per cent of the respondents have invested in energy efficiency in the last year;

    Three quarters of all respondents said that they anticipate upto 15 per cent of their electricity coming from
renewable sources in the next three to five years;

    83 per cent of the respondents anticipated spending, in the year ahead, at least the same as last year on energy
efficiency. 49 per cent of the respondents anticipated spending, in the year ahead, more than last year on energy efficiency;

    Adoption of energy efficiency measures is 50 per cent greater in non-metros compared to metro cities;

    Use of energy efficient lighting is the most common energy efficiency measure that is adopted by the Indian industry;

    Cost-savings was the biggest driver for energy efficiency investment decisions. Brand image, policy or
standards and government incentives were other significant drivers; Businesses in metro cities spend more on energy compared to the businesses in non-metro areas;

    The average annual energy spend of the respondents was INR 3.4 crores, out of which businesses spend approximately INR 1 crore on diesel as fuel for generators and other processes;

    About 2/3rd (between 68
– 70 per cent) of energy expenses across both metros and non-metros are on grid based power;

    The balance is primarily on diesel (between 24 – 26 per cent) and gas (a little over three per cent) and other sources.
